Sample chapter

Also a sample chapter of Beneath Gray Skies, the acclaimed alternative history novel:

So where's the Kindle version?

You couldn’t see it on Amazon's Kindle store, right? Well, it's not actually that surprising, because it wasn't on the Amazon Kindle store for a long time. I had my reasons, one of which is the way in which Amazon seem to be treating suppliers (I don't take checks, which is the only way for Amazon to send money overseas, it appears), and I much prefer to work with Mark and the guys at Smashwords who are currently in negotiation with Amazon to distribute the Kindle-compatible files created through Smashwords.

Mark Coker at Smashwords has very kindly kicked Amazon into life as far as At the Sharpe End and Beneath Gray Skies is concerned. These are now available from the Kindle Store, for international delivery for $7.99 each. If you want to save money and trees, this is one way to go.

Click on the appropriate book to go to the Amazon page where you can download a sample or buy the whole thing.

At the Sharpe End Kindle Edition Beneath Gray Skies Kindle edition

There is also a Kindle-compatible (MOBI) version of the book at Smashwords. You can download it and view it in your PC or Mac Kindle.

For a PC running Windows 7, the folder is apparently documents\My Kindle Content (I quote that as I find it – I'm not running Windows 7). On XP, it's My Documents\My Kindle Content. I assume that the address is something similar on a Mac (I'm not running the Kindle app on a Mac, since it's Intel only – Amazon obviously have problems with using Xcode to produce fat binaries). On a jailbroken iPhone, the folder is (apparently) var/mobile/applications/kindle/ebooks.

However, for reasons best known to Amazon, there seems to be no syncing between the desktop application and the iPhone/iPad or even the Kindle, as there is with iBooks:

Or with Stanza:

Conclusion

I therefore strongly advise anyone who wants to read the book on an iPad or an iPhone not to use the Kindle application, but to download Stanza or iBooks, and use the version from Smashwords.
